Basically, Vim is free and an advanced text editor, which harvests the power of Unix’ editor ‘Vi’, albeit with an enhanced feature set. This requires a compiler and its support files. Compiling Vim isn’t difficult at all. You can simply type “make install” when you are happy with the default features.

There are also 64bit versions that only run on 64 bit MS-Windows and use a lot more memory, but are compatible with 64-bit plugins.
